Holiday Nightmares - What to do if you Get Sick Abroad

It’s one of the ultimate nightmare scenarios: going off on the amazing summer holiday you’ve spent thousands of pounds and countless planning hours on, only to get taken ill or injured and have the whole thing ruined through no fault of your own.

What to do if you get sick on holiday

If you’re on a package holiday and injure yourself or fall ill you should immediately go to your holiday rep, they will be able to recommend where to go to get appropriate medical care. If you’re travelling independently you should ask the receptionist at your hotel to find out where the local medical facilities are.

Following this, you should check your medical insurance policy to ensure you are covered for your specific problem. Different policies cover different things and can be wildly different, so it’s up to you to ensure you have the correct cover.

Throughout the process you should ensure to keep hold of all your medical notes and receipts for your records. These will also come in useful if you take the decision to make a claim later. If you think that your illness or injury is the fault of the hotel you should also inform your hotel management and take the contact information of anyone who would be able and willing to verify your story once you’re back home.

What can I claim for?

There are a wide range of illnesses and injuries you can claim for on holiday, some of the most common include:

  • Food poisoning.
  • Slips/trips around the pool.
  • Bedbugs.

You may also be able to make a claim for accidents which occur on trips or a range of other potential issues.

How do I claim compensation after getting ill on holiday?

If you have been taken ill or been injured on holiday because of negligence from a hotel or tour operator, you may be eligible to make a claim for compensation. Although nothing will be able to make up for a wasted holiday, it will ensure you are adequately compensated for the time you have lost.
