Doctors have been forced to continue to treat a "deeply religious" Sunni Muslim who is in a "minimally conscious" state following a cardiac arrest.Hospital bosses had asked Mr Justice Newton to allow doctors to stop treating the man - who is in his 40s and has suffered brain damage.
Relatives wanted treatment to continue and said they had seen "purposeful responses" - and the judge has praised them for their "persistence".
He said it was unfortunate that relations between hospital bosses and the man's family had become "increasingly polarised".
Mr Justice Newton had analysed evidence earlier this month at a hearing in the Court of Protection - where issues relating to sick and vulnerable people are considered.
