Compensation for Victim of Exploding Pressure Cooker

Compensation for Victim of Exploding Pressure Cooker

Garratts Solicitors have recently helped an Oldham man successfully recover compensation from the manufacturer of a well-known pressure cooker after it exploded and showered him in hot liquid.

The problem with the pressure cooker

The pressure cooker’s explosion caused severe scalding and burns to the man’s torso, hands and face. The manufacturers initially denied the fault was with their product and put the explosion down to user misuse. Upon hearing the story of the claimant and disagreeing with the manufacturer, we instructed a Product Safety Engineer to inspect the product.

This inspection showed that the cooker had manufacturing defects, with the Product Safety Engineer identifying a small red plastic moulding on the cooker as being defective, thus allowing the pressure cooker lid to be opened when it was unsafe to do so.

Following our inspection, the manufacturer was forced to admit that it was their product which had been the problem and agreed to pay compensation to the claimant.
