The Coronavirus Pandemic has brought the criminal justice system to its knees with trials in the Crown Courts being re-listed as far into the future as autumn 2021. Facing a criminal investigation or prosecution can be an emotionally and mentally debilitating time not just for the defendant but also for their families. For those who should have been facing trials during 2020, their anxiety will continue for months to come as a result of slow process and court backlogs in courts of all denominations across the UK. Not only are those on bail living with restrictions for much longer periods than anticipated, but defendants remanded into custody are also having their custody time limits extended as a result of the delays.
