Magistrates now able to sentence up to a year

Magistrates were previously only empowered to sentence up to a maximum of 6 months. As at 2nd May 2022 they can now sentence up to 12 months. With only an additional half day’s training and webinars; magistrates will be expected to ease the strain on the Crown Court, being able to sentence cases such as fraud, theft and assault.

Mohamed Patel, Crime partner at Garratts says, “It’s always important that you seek the right legal advice before you go to Court and now more than ever you should ensure that you have the best representation at Court."
