Failure to identify ‘Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS)’

Failure to identify ‘Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS)’

Miss R was subjected to medical negligence by her local hospital when she became pregnant with twins. There was a failure on the part of the Trust to identify that there was a condition called ‘Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS)’. As a consequence of this and the fact that no treatment was provided in respect of the same, Miss R went into labour very early and both of her babies sadly died.

Garratts were able to obtain medical evidence on behalf of Miss R which concluded that in the absence of negligence, treatment could have been offered and one of the twins would have survived. Sadly, one of the twins would always have died even in the absence of negligence. In addition, Miss R suffered significant psychiatric symptoms as a result of the loss of her babies.

An early admission was obtained from the Trust’s representatives and the parties worked together to obtain a favourable settlement for Miss R, she was awarded £38,000.
