Missed or Delayed Diagnosis of Ectopic Pregnancy

Missed or Delayed Diagnosis of Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy is a serious and potentially life threatening condition that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. While many cases are identified early, failures in recognising the signs can still occur. When there is a delay in diagnosis, the consequences for patients can be significant, both physically and emotionally.

What is an Ectopic Pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilised egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly in one of the fallopian tubes. The pregnancy cannot develop normally and, if left untreated, can cause the tube to rupture, leading to internal bleeding.

This is a medical emergency. Early diagnosis is key to reducing the risk of serious harm.

Where Do Failures Occur?

Clinical negligence in ectopic pregnancy cases often arises where warning signs are not properly assessed or acted upon.

Patients presenting with abdominal pain and bleeding in early pregnancy should be assessed with ectopic pregnancy in mind. A failure to take an adequate history or consider this possibility can result in missed opportunities for early diagnosis.

Timely investigations, including blood tests to measure hCG levels and ultrasound scans, are essential. Delays in arranging or interpreting these tests can allow the condition to progress.

The Consequences of Delay

Where an ectopic pregnancy is not diagnosed promptly, the fallopian tube may rupture. This can lead to:

  • Severe internal bleeding
  • Emergency surgery
  • Loss of a fallopian tube
  • Fertility complications
  • Psychological trauma

In some cases, the outcome can be life-threatening.

Bringing a Clinical Negligence Claim

A claim will usually focus on whether:

  • A reasonably competent clinician would have identified the risk of ectopic pregnancy; and
  • Earlier diagnosis and treatment would have avoided or reduced the harm suffered.

These cases often require careful review of the patient’s symptoms, the timing of investigations, and the decisions made by healthcare professionals at each stage.

Cases involving ectopic pregnancy can be complex and sensitive. Early legal advice can help clarify whether the standard of care fell below what would reasonably be expected and whether the outcome could have been different with appropriate treatment.
